The printer does not print, and one of the following error messages or warning lights is displayed on the control panel of the printer or the computer screen.

  • Fault Cartridges
  • Cartridge in Wrong Slot
  • Cartridge No
  • Cartridge problem
  • Ink out Cartridges
  • Incompatible cartridges
  • Ink cartridge Failure
  • Missing or undetectable print cartridges

Step 1: Check the ink cartridge number

Make sure the ink cartridge number matches your printer and country/region.
Open the HP Store, then verify the ink cartridge number for your printer model and country/region. Replace incompatible ink cartridges.
If the error persists, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer failures.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to the wall socket and to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer.

If the error persists, proceed to the next step.

The steps to resolve the issue vary based on the type of ink cartridge that your printer uses. Identify your ink cartridge type, and then follow the steps to resolve the problem.

The following steps apply to all printers with only two ink cartridge slots (black and tricolor).
NOTE: If you do not have an available replacement ink cartridge and need to print, remove the ink cartridge shown in the error message to start the one-cartridge mode. Acknowledge any confirmations on the computer or printer, and then submit the print job. Make sure to complete the steps in this section before you install the new ink cartridge.

Step 1: Clean the electrical contacts
Remove the ink cartridge indicated by the error message, clean the electrical contacts, and then re-insert the ink cartridge in its color-coded slot.

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the door to access the ink cartridge.
  3. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.
  4. Remove the ink cartridge shown in the error message from its slot, holding it on its side.
    WARNING: Do not touch copper or ink-coloured contacts. Touching these parts can cause blockages, ink failures, and poor electrical connections.
  5. Remove all protective ribbons that may still be in your contacts.

  6. Dampen a little fibre-free cloth with distilled water, and then clean only the copper-coloured contacts on the ink cartridges.

  7. Moisten a little lint-free cloth with distilled water, then clean the power contacts in the media, located inside the printer.

  8. Wait 10 minutes for the contact to dry.
  9. Re-insert the ink cartridge.
    – Insert the black ink cartridge into the appropriate slot.
    – Insert the three-color ink cartridge into the left slot.
  10. Repeat this step for other ink cartridges, if necessary.
  11. Close the ink cartridge access door.
    If the error persists, repeat the previous step to clean the ink cartridge and transport the contact a second time.
  12. Check for error messages.

If the error persists, proceed to the next step.
